General

Positions are derived from JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratories) DE405 ephemerides files, then processed and stored in a small binary database containing Longitude, Velocity, Latitude and Declination.

  • The iPhemeris database contains Midnight and Noon GMT positions from which are interpolated the user selected time for the ephemeris.
  • Positions can be displayed in either Geocentric or Sidereal coordinates.
  • Landscape & Portrait orientations are supported for most iPhemeris Views. Just change the device orientation .

iPhemeris Tabs

  • Standard Ephemeris tables (Longitude)
  • Charts: Add, Edit and Display
  • Aspectarian Calendar
  • Settings and Preferences
  • Chart of the "Sky Now", updates every 15 seconds.
  • Transit Calendar showing Transits to YOUR Event Chart.
  • Display the Declination and Latitude tables.
  • Display the Real-Time house display, updates every 15 seconds.

Changing Tab Order

On the iPhone (not available on iPad) you can re-arrange the order of functions displayed on the Tab Bar at the bottom of the screen any time you like.

  • The "More" button takes you to "More" menu.
  • Tap the Edit button to display the more menu (show at right).

  • Re-arrange functions on the tab bar and the menu by dragging them around.
  • To change a function on the Tab Bar to a different one, drag its Icon to the place you want it.
  • Tap the Done button to finish and your new order will be saved.
  • ANy Functions you can't fit onto the Tab Bar are always available on the More menu.

Settings

The settings menu enables you to configure many aspects of iPhemeris behavior. It is worth understanding all of them as they give you quite a bit of flexibility and power over the way iPhemeris behaves.

Settings - Ephemeris

  • Tropical / Sidereal
    • In Tropical mode, ALL positions are displayed using conventional tropical coordinates.
    • In Sidereal mode, ALL positions are displayed using the selected Ayanamsha.
  • GMT / Your Local Time Zone
    • GMT: Ephemeris positions are for GMT at the Hour selected.
    • Your Local Time Zone: Ephemeris positions are shown for your local time at the Hour selected. iPhemeris detects your devices local time zone and displays it on the button. Once set it stays that way until reset.
    • If you are traveling and would like it to adjust to the Time Zone at your current location, simply toggle it on/off and it will reset to the Time Zone the phone is currently in.
  • Hour - This sets the Hour used for your selected Time Zone. For example, if you are using GMT and this is set to 12 displayed values are for Noon GMT. If you are using local time then this corresponds to Noon in your Local Time Zone.
  • Ayanamsha
    • If the Ephemeris is in Sidereal Mode, this sets the Ayanamsha used.
    • Supported Ayanamsha are shown on the "Symbol Reference" page. These are for the year 1900 and are then corrected for the year being viewed using the approximate rate of annual precession (0.013911111 degrees per year).
    • If iPhemeris is set to "Sidereal Mode" the selected Ayanamsha values are used by ALL features throughout the application: Ephemeris, Calendars and Charts.

Ephemeris Tables

  • Ephemeris pages displays a full month.
  • Data is grouped into weeks and weeks start on Sunday.
  • The date column shows day # and day of the week.
  • Two Lunar values are included:
    • This first corresponds to the values the Ephemeris is set to in Settings.
    • The second is that position +12 hours.
  • GST column displays Greenwich Sidereal Time for the Ephemeris settings.
  • Bodies beyond the Moon obeys the Settings for precision (DMS & DM).
    • DMS: 11 9' 45"R = 11 degrees, 9 minutes 45 seconds of arc, in the sign of Aries. The Planet is Retrograde.
    • DM: 12 1.9 = 11 degrees, 1.9 minutes of Arc in the sign of Aquarius.

Navigation:

  • You can navigate around ALL table displays using the various Touch gestures.
  • Use the left / right arrows to go forward and back one month at a time.
  • Use the "Goto Calednar" button (center) to goto a specific date.

Declination & Latitude

  • The Declination / Latitude page shows two columns for each body.
  • Declination is in the first column.
  • Latitude is in the second column.
  • Displayed values obey the DMS & DM Settings for precision.
    • DMS: 25 n 28' 59" = 25 degrees North, 28 minutes, 59 seconds.
    • DM: 25 n 29 = 25 degrees North, 29 minutes.

Aspectarian Calendar

An Aspectarian calendar shows the relationship between bodies in the sky on a particular date. For example the Sun on that date relative to Saturn on the same date.

  • It uses a calendar like format.
  • Reading the display:    0.0      1.0 - Is interpreted to mean Sun at 0.0 degrees of Capricorn is conjunct Uranus at 1.0 degrees of Capricorn.
  • Aspects for bodies other than the moon are displayed according to the Aspectarian Orb settings.
  • You can set Orbs for the Aspectarian (or turn one off completely) in Settings.
  • Due to the large number of Lunar aspects, these are currently NOT included in the Aspectarian.
  • The Aspectarian obeys Settings for showing Asteroids or not.

Transit Calendar

  • It uses a calendar like format.
  • The first value is the position of the planetary element for the Ephemeris settings on that calendar date.
  • The second value is the position of the planetary element int the Event Chart.
  • The Event Chart positions are based on the Transit Event section on the Settings menu. See the discussion above about setting these values.
  • Reading the display:    0.0      1.0 = Sun on the calendar date at 0.0 degrees of Capricorn is conjunct transiting Uranus at 1.0 degrees of Capricorn on the user specified Transit Date/Time.
  • You can set Orbs for the Transit Calendar (or turn one off completely) in Settings.
  • Due to the large number of Lunar aspects, these are currently NOT included in the Transit Calendar.
  • The Transit Calendar obeys Settings for showing Asteroids or not.

Sky Now

  • "Sky Now" uses the House System selected in Settings for Chart Defaults.
  • If your device has a GPS and can get location, it uses that.
  • If Location Services are NOT available "Sky Now" uses the Default Latitude and Longitude in Settings for Chart Defaults.
  • iPhemeris comes with a default setting for New York City until you change it.
  • The chart updates the display every 15 seconds to display current positions.

Houses Now

  • The Houses Clock uses the House System selected in Preferences.
  • If your device has a GPS and it can get a signal it will use your current location.
  • If no Location Services are available to your device then the defaults for Latitude and Longitude in Settings are used.
  • iPhemeris comes with a default setting for New York City until you change it.
  • The chart updates the display every 15 seconds to display current positions.

Using MapView to Find Latitude & Longitude

  • If you your settings allow use of the Internet Atlas then you will be shown the Map view when selecting Latitude or Longitude.
  • Use it to find the chart location. Scroll around or use the new address Search Bar to lookup an address. It's pretty smart, try it! For example, entering "NY" will likely find NYC, "San Fran", San Francisco, "London" or "Paris", those places in Europe, etc.
  • Set the Latitude and Longitude by positioning the cross hairs over the location you want. Setting either, sets both.
  • To look up a time zone at the location on the MapView use the clock button.
  • If your settings are are to turn OFF the Internet Atlas then you will see wheels for manually setting the Latitude and Longitude.

Looking Up TimeZones

  • You can lookup Time Zones from either the MapView or the Time Zone View.
  • To do so requires internet access and that Lat / Lng values have been set for the Chart.
  • Use this button on either the MapView or the TimeZone View to look up Time Zones.
  • The GeoNames database will attempt to lookup the Time Zone for the given latitude and longitude, and it will detect if Day Light Savings time was in effect or not if applicable.
